During his long tenure as an umpire; was one of the game’s most colorful characters . . . known for his animated strike calls . . . saw his first duty in the National League late in the 1973 season and became a full-time umpire the following campaign . . . umpired in the NL through the 1992 season . . . worked three World Series (1980; 1983; 1989); two Major League All-Star Games (1979; 1984) and six NL Championship Series; including the 1988 series between the Dodgers and the New York Mets . . . was a Pacific Coast League umpire from 1965-73; working one Triple-A World Series and four playoff series . . . in 1979; was inducted into the Oshkosh North High School Hall of Fame . . in 1978; received the Red Smith Award for outstanding contribution to our national pastime.
